Summary

A breach of approximately 360 patients’ medical records at a Health Sciences Centre in Manitoba highlights the significance of privacy breaches within healthcare settings and the importance of stringent protocols to safeguard patient information.

The announcement made by Shared Health on Friday is the latest in a series of privacy breaches involving Manitoba healthcare workers.

A former clinical staff member who “snooped” through electronic medical records out of curiosity over a period spanning August to March, underscores how unauthorized access to medical records not only violates patient confidentiality but also raises concerns about data security and privacy breaches within healthcare settings.

Ann Cavoukian, former three-term information and privacy commissioner of Ontario, and executive director of the Global Privacy and Security by Design Centre, describes the severity of the breach as “unconscionable.”

The immense sensitivity of health information is among the most private and personal data individuals possess, said Ms. Cavoukian, who calls for transparency in the investigation process and any disciplinary actions taken.
