The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) faced a critical juncture in the early spring of 1989, with the potential to align with the world by embracing China’s cultural heritage and implementing gradual reforms. In the revised edition of her book, “Deng Xiaoping in 1989,” Chinese investigative journalist and author Dai Qing suggests that Deng Xiaoping was contemplating substantial reforms but the Tiananmen Square Incident abruptly halted these efforts. Dai believes that if China had followed the path of gradual reform, it could have integrated with the world. Dai said Deng’s wish before dying was to see China evolve gradually into something more like Hong Kong and Taiwan.
However, not everyone shares Dai’s optimistic view.
