According to a recent Angus Reid poll, a clear majority of Albertans — 57% — would definitely vote to stay in Canada if a referendum were held on Alberta becoming an independent country. These stayers have their reasons, most compellingly the fear expressed by 93% of them of “the prospect of an independent Alberta struggling to get its resources out of its landlocked state.”
Lawrence Solomon shows the fear is backwards.
The current reality has already hemmed in the province’s growth and opportunities through federal and provincial restrictions. Becoming independent, he argues, would unlock for Alberta a world of advantages, enabling the new country to trade like Switzerland, Austria, and other landlocked success stories. And if Ottawa plays hardball, Alberta has some ace cards to counter with.
