What does freedom mean and what will it take for an independent Alberta to turn the page and chart a new era? Law professor and Articles of Freedom author Bruce Pardy reminds us that most of the rules that bind Albertans today already come from Edmonton, not Ottawa. Hand the same unlimited power to a new capital and you get the same managerial state with a different flag.

Freedom is this: no one may initiate force against you—not your neighbour, not the state. The government exists only to stop force, keep the peace, decide disputes, and guard the border. Everything else is off-limits. The Canadian model starts with unlimited state power and then pretends to carve out rights. Those rights get interpreted away. A free country starts with zero state power and then lists the few things it may do.
