Stockwell Day (stay) vs. Bruce Pardy (leave): Alberta should keep fighting inside Canada rather than secede.
Two debates: filmed live in Edmonton on Thursday, September 17, and in Calgary on Friday, September 18. Moderated by Jason Lavigne. Each speaker received 30 minutes under chess-clock rules, followed by rebuttals, cross-examination, and audience Q&A.
Stockwell Day (Stay) argues Alberta’s grievances are real — equalization, debt, immigration, crime, and federal overreach — but that leaving would trigger years of uncertainty, stalled investment, and constitutional deadlock. He says Albertans should keep pushing for more autonomy inside Confederation.
Bruce Pardy (Leave) argues Canada is broken at a deeper level than policy tweaks can fix. He says constitutional reform is effectively impossible, the Canadian political character will not change, and Alberta’s only real choice is independence — even if negotiations are messy.
